The Details

IVF (in vitro fertilization) is a widely recognized assisted reproductive technology that has helped countless individuals and couples overcome infertility and achieve their family building goals. It involves a multi-stage process that begins with ovarian stimulation, where medications are used to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, rather than the single egg typically produced each month. This is done to increase the chances of successful fertilization and pregnancy.

Once the eggs have reached maturity, they are retrieved from the ovaries through a minor surgical procedure, typically performed under light sedation. A thin needle is guided through the vagina and into the ovaries to collect the eggs, which are then carefully transported to the laboratory.

The Fertilization Process In the laboratory setting, the retrieved eggs are combined with sperm in a process called insemination. Fertilization occurs when a sperm successfully penetrates an egg, forming a zygote. The zygote then undergoes cell division, developing into an embryo. The embryos are closely monitored and cultured in the laboratory for several days, typically 3 to 5 days, allowing embryologists to assess their growth and development using advanced imaging techniques. The final stage of IVF involves an embryo transfer, where one or more selected embryos are carefully placed into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter. After the transfer, progesterone supplements are often prescribed to support the uterine lining and increase the chances of implantation. The subsequent two weeks are known as the “waiting period,” after which a pregnancy test is performed to determine if the IVF cycle was successful.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IVF?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an advanced fertility treatment where eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a lab. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the uterus to help achieve pregnancy. IVF is a proven option for individuals and couples experiencing various fertility challenges.

Who is IVF for?

IVF can benefit those with:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Male factor infertility
  • Unexplained fertility
  • Conditions such as endometriosis
  • Those using donor eggs, sperm or embryos
  • LGBTQ+ individuals or couples
  • Single individuals pursuing parenthood

What are the steps in IVF?
  • Ovarian stimulation: Medications are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
  • Egg retrieval: A minimally invasive procedure to collect mature eggs.
  • Embryo transfer: A healthy embryo is placed into the uterus to establish pregnancy.
  • Follow-up: A blood test is conducted to confirm pregnancy.

How long does the IVF process take?

From when the Onto Fertility Assessment is completed to when an embryo transfer occurs, the IVF process typically spans 4-12 weeks. However, additional cycles or preparation steps may extend this timeline depending on individual needs.

What are the success rates of IVF?

IVF success rates vary by age, health and fertility history. Generally, success rates range from 20-80% per cycle, with higher rates for younger individuals or those using donor eggs. Our clinicians can provide a personalized assessment of your chances following the completion of your Fertility Assessment.

Is IVF painful?

IVF is generally well-tolerated. Some may experience mild discomfort during egg retrieval or from ovarian stimulation medications. Our team prioritizes your comfort and offers support throughout the process.

What are the risks associated with IVF?

While generally safe, IVF does have some risks, including:

  • Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)
  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Procedure-related discomfort or infection
  • Emotional stress

At Onto we take every precaution to minimize risks and provide compassionate care.

How much does IVF cost?

The cost of IVF varies based on treatment specifics and optional add-ons, such as PGT genetic testing. At the completion of your Onto Fertility Assessment, we provide customized transparent pricing, financing options and insurance guidance to make care as accessible as possible.

Does insurance cover IVF?

Insurance coverage varies, so it’s important to check with your insurance provider. Our team can help you navigate your insurance benefits and explore financing options if needed.

How do I know if IVF is right for me?

The best way to determine if IVF is right for you is to complete our Fertility Assessment, which includes a consultation with an Onto Clinician. We’ll review your medical history, discuss your goals, and outline a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
